Happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers!

A friend of mine asked me for some recommendations on blogs recently, and I thought I would start sharing (not more than twice a month) my favorite blogs. Not only what they are, but why I like them. So to start this off, I am picking the first blog of the week:

LifeHacker

Why was Lifehacker chosen? To me, Lifehacking is about not wasting time and energy on stuff that doesn’t really matter, so it fits right it to what I try to accomplish with simplicity and productivity.

The Lifehacker team culls through thousands of news items, user-submitted tips and other blogs to pull out tips on everything from software to safety to cooking to optimization. This gives me a large selection of material to choose from.

The Downside to Lifehacker: Lifehacker produces a lot of articles. Twenty to thirty per day. And they don’t publish full content in their feed, either, so I have to go to the site to read the article.

Why I Like Lifehacker: In spite of the above, they are very, very good at titles, and I can tell from their titles if I want to read the rest of the article. I usually find one or two articles a day that I go on to read.

Lifehacker also classifies their articles in the feed titles, so I can glance at an article and see [Android] and know that I can skip it.

Their summaries are concise, to the point, and well written. The information is usually helpful, accurate, and often written in an entertaining style. The also have a very active commenter base, who often provide more information or alternatives.

I would like to make this an interactive feature, so please email me with your favorite blog (LJ (AT) simpleproductivityblog (DOT) com), or leave it in the comments below. I will do my best look at every blog that people send me.

Great idea LJ! The only problem is that you will be giving me EVEN MORE fab blogs to read!
So…a question. How do you organise your time to read them? I have a list but that’s as far as I get!!

  3. LJ Earnest says:

I’m glad you asked! I have a system for getting through my blogs very quickly. I outlined it in How I Keep On Top of 100+ Blogs.

My current reading list is about 111 blogs and 7 Google Alerts.

I look forward to more of your recommended blog reading.

You’re posting on a holiday–I’m impressed! I wish I could get into a more regular posting schedule. Sometime you should share some blogging productivity tips (creating a posting schedule, generating article ideas, etc.).

    Happy Thanksgiving!

While I am actually online right now (Thanksgiving evening), my blog posts are automated and go out automatically via WordPress. :) I don’t actually get up every morning and post. If I had to, the blog would be updated sporadically. And truth be told, it is the main reason I moved the blog from Blogger over to WordPress.

I will make a note of blogging productivity tips — it will fit in really nicely with a book I am reviewing right now. More on that soon!

And as far as being online on Thanksgiving, it’s amazing what I can come up with to do when I am trying to avoid writing my book!

      Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Lifehacker does publish full articles in their feed if you subscribe to their “VIP” feed.
