People spend a lot of time at work in their office cubicles. A cubicle is difficult to feng shui, since it is so compact. Considering that workers spend most of their day in a tiny cramped space, using feng shui will help improve workers productivity levels.
Office cubicles are either grey or other drab color, which does not promote a positive energy throughout the space. People work underneath fluorescent lighting, so they do not see the light of day until they leave the office. When people feng shui their space, they will have a boost in energy and efficiency throughout the day. They will get more work done when they feel a positive energy emanating from their workspace.
5 tips to Improve Your working Space
- The first way to improve feng shui in the office cubicle is to change the position of the desk . In Feng Shui each person aligns with one of the eight directions and can use four of the eight directions to their personal and professional benefit. People who see the door are more productive than when they have their backs to the door. When people have their backs to the door, it creates a negative energy vibe throughout the area. People who face the door will feel empowered and in control of their space. If it is not possible to switch the cubicle around to face the door, using a mirror to reflect the door often helps improve the feng shui in the cubicle.
- Most cubicles do not see natural light, or they are not in front of windows. When people are exposed to natural light, they are more productive throughout the day. Companies who use fluorescent bulbs should switch them for a warmer light to increase positive energy in the cubicle. If people are not able to switch out the light bulbs, try to take short breaks outside to soak in natural light.
- Plants are another way to improve people’s productivity levels in cubicles. They absorb carbon dioxide in the air, which helps to purify the atmosphere. This helps improve moods and productivity levels when people have live plants in their cubicles. Another item that workers can use is to buy a water fountain to sit on their desks. Flowing water helps relax and create a feng shui atmosphere.
- Clean your space. When people have messy and cluttered desks, they need to reorganize their space. Shelves that are above the desk should be empty, and store items in cabinets to increase the feng shui in the cubicle. Books on shelves often will make people feel weighed down by the weight of their workloads, reducing productivity levels.
- A last way to improve productivity in small work spaces is to use air fresheners. Clean scents promote relaxation, but not to the point where productivity dips. There are scents, such as lemons and oranges, that help boost energy levels.

As someone who works in a cubical farm, #1 is impossible since the “furniture” is fixed. Our backs are positioned to the doorway. I don’t like it but this is what we’re stuck with.
As for #5, that’s fine for someone with a closed office. In a cubicle farm or open office area, it is inconsiderate of the surrounding workers. I would have a serious problem if my co-workers started using scented products. I am sensitive to scents, good (perfumed products) or bad (solvents, paints, etc.). Someone using a scented hand cream next to me will give me a headache within a few minutes. No amount of pain meds will get rid of a headache caused by being in the vicinity of scented products. The only solution is avoidance to exposure.
