Fitting in Exercise

When I was unemployed, I would go for a 45 minute walk with the dog in the morning, and then spend at least a half hour on the treadmill in the afternoon (because I told myself I couldn’t watch The Office unless I was on the treadmill). So when I went back to work, I started to gain weight…quickly.

So how can I fit in exercise into a schedule that has constraints on it?

Before. I can exercise before work, while my husband is still home with my daughter. This is dependent on weather and the ability to get up.

During. If the weather is cool, I can go for a walk during lunch.

After. The first hour after getting home is generally filled with my daughter doing her tasks: summer reading and piano. I can get some Wii Fit time or treadmill time during this time.

Evening. If the weather is cool, I can get a walk in after sunset. The ever-present mosquitoes give me incentive to keep up the pace, too.

Family activities. During the summer we don’t watch movies on Friday nights. No one seems inclined to do so. So we’ve been doing family Wii games. Last night I played for 90 minutes without even realizing it. These are the games like bowling, tennis and golf – not the passive sit-down games.

Housework. Housework can count as exercise if I really move. Cleaning vigorously can burn off calories.

These are what I have come up with. I would love to hear what other people do to find time, especially those who have kids and work!
