How To Bake Potatoes Without An Oven

On a recent very warm Sunday, I was supposed to bake a bunch of potatoes for the upcoming week. I couldn’t bring myself to turn the oven on, and the thought of baked potatoes in the microwave (which turn out more steamed than baked) was unappetizing.
My eye fell on my trust crockpot. So I baked the potatoes in the crock pot instead. I was skeptical, but it did work!
Baking Potatoes in the Crockpot
- First, pick out your potatoes and wash them.
- Next, stab them with a fork several times and spray them with olive oil
.
- Wrap them tightly in foil.
- Put in the crock.
- Turn the crock on low, and in about eight hours, you will have baked potatoes!
As an additional heat-buster, if you can put the crock outside during this time, even that heat will be spared! I like to put my crock on the workbench in the garage.
Baked potatoes without the heat of the oven. And the smell was heavenly toward the end!

Ok, I’ve got to ask – what is the point of spraying the olive oil?
I believe that the point is to keep them from sticking to the foil. At least that is what I found… I forgot to spray one and it was stuck like you wouldn’t believe. It wouldn’t be a big deal if you don’t eat the potato skins.
Ahhh, so the spraying isn’t significant, it’s the need to apply some sort of fat. Thanks.
Yes. And I found that if I spray too heavily, the outsides get kind of slick. I like my oil mister because it lightly mists with oil (and I don’t use commercial sprays because of the propellants). But with a light hand, you could also baste them with a brush. Veggie oil would work if you don’t like the taste of olive oil.
I think I’d try butter or ghee (clarified butter). Butter tastes great with potatoes and the stable saturated fatty acid profile holds up well to heat. I only use OO for non-cooked foods anymore (heat damages the oil) and I don’t use industrial seed “vegetable” oils at all (except to paint
.
I’ll bet this slow cooker technique would work with sweet potatoes/yams, too.
