How To Keep Electronics From Taking Over Your Working Space

Fridays are tip days at SimpleProductivity blog.
I don’t know many people who don’t have multiple gadgets. Between the cell phones, PDAs, MP3s, thumb drives and others, most of us have piles of devices on our desktop.
When I would arrive at work, I would dutifully transfer my Palm, cell phone, MP3, USB drive, USB chargers and headphones to my desktop. Most days these items would remain untouched. I would pack them up at the end of the day, where I would repeat the process on my home desk.
Except at home my desk is much smaller, and I usually ended up knocking something onto the floor.
There are a couple of different ways to handle this problem:
- Consolidate gadgets. The obvious way to have less clutter is to have less gadgetry. Consolidate what you can, get rid of the rest.
- Keep unused gadgets put away. You don’t have to keep everything out at once. For example, I rarely used the chargers at work. I could have kept them in my briefcase until I actually needed them. Same with all the others.
- Box them up. There are some nice boxes now that combine gadget holders with a charging base (see Mr. Handsfree Family Charger
). Alternatively, a simple box just to toss the devices in will work to corral them.
Since I put a gadget box (found at Michael’s Craft store for $3.99) on my desk, my desktop has been less cluttered. Plus I always know where the devices are.
