Open Loops 6/23/2009: Articles I Think Worth Passing Along

Over at OrganizeIt, (How To Recharge Your Emotional Batteries) there was something in the paragraph that brought me up short: “Feel down, fed up, not motivated to do anything? You need to recharge those batteries.” Up until I made the decision to clear my weekends, I was really having trouble getting motivated. Now I’ve made a connection.

A second article from OrganizeIt “Considering The Cumulative Effect Of Your Actions” gives an example of how little amounts of money spent can really add up quickly. The article got me thinking about other things, though.

There are so many problems facing us these days, that it is easy to think that nothing we do can matter. Take water issues. I’ve been trying to conserve water, and I find that even though I haven’t made major changes, my little changes are enough to show up in the water bill at the end of the month. What if every one of us was nice to someone today instead of being indifferent? Not a big deal, perhaps, but that is just a bit more kindness in the world. And who knows, maybe we would start something!

TipNut presented something I wish I had seen about a month ago, when I was processing bulk strawberries for freezing: “Smart Tip: Bulk Freezing With An Empty Can Funnel” You take the ends off a clean can, and use it to fill freezer bags. The best part about this is it stands up on its own. So if you don’t have a third hand, you can easily put it down without worrying it will tip over or slide into the bag.

A decluttering tip from ApartmentTherapy via Lifehacker that needs all the airplay possible: “Organize More Efficiently by Staying Put” This is vital. If you leave the work site to put something away, you can easily get distracted and end up not finishing at all.

A good reminder in cutting down busy-ness from Craving Balance (“If you want to stop craving balance, answer these 5 questions”): “Get one thing straight about your busyness: You’re choosing it.” And the only way to get around it? Say No.

Thanks! There is so much information out there, and many posts just hit me with a “that might be interesting…” but yet not enough for me to get a whole blog post written. Plus it forces me to keep up with blog reading. :)

  2. Thanks for the links to two of my posts! Regarding keeping those batteries charged, I’ve found trying to spread your workload out over the week is very effective. Just one hectic day of having to do and deal with everything can set you back for the rest of the week.

I have been balancing my work load over the weekdays, both paid work and household things, so I can have my weekends free to do creative work. The knowledge that I don’t have to deal with loads of laundry on a Saturday, but I can sit and read if that is what appeals to me, is really freeing. Piling all the household tasks into the weekend just makes me grumpy. :)
