Why spend more time cleaning than you have to? Today for Practical Productivity, I want to pass on my tips for cleaning a nasty microwave oven.

Tools

  • A glass measuring cup or large coffee mug
  • Lemon juice (the kind in the bottle is fine)
  • Rags or paper towels
  • For really nasty messes, a Mr. Clean Eraser

How To De-gunk A Microwave

Fill the measuring cup with cold water. Add a hefty amount of lemon juice.

Put the cup in the microwave, and on high power, nuke the water until it has boiled (full boil) for about 10 seconds. Watch the water to make sure the cup does not run dry.

Using hand protection, remove the measuring cup from the microwave. (Be careful – the water is superheated and even though may not look it, is dangerously hot). Immediately wipe out the stuff with a damp paper towel or rag.

If stuff is really stuck on, you might have to repeat this more than once, or use a Mr. Clean eraser to get the stuff out. (If you use the eraser, make sure to rinse well! I don’t know what kind of chemicals are in them, but I sure don’t want it in my food).
