Review: Padlock Hack

Summary

Padlock Hack, by Handmill Software, is a way to intelligently lock down your Palm device!.

Overview

Manufacturer: Handmill Software
Platform: Palm
Current Version: Palm: 1.5

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Quick entry of passwords
  • Has a Smart locking mode

Cons

  • Limited amount of letters possible
  • Needs Hacksoftware (like XMaster) to run
  • Doesn’t work well on newer versions of the Palm OS.

Why Did I Download/Buy This?

I wanted to lock down my PDA, but I didn’t want to have to write out a password every time. Padlock hack allowed me to assign characters to hardware buttons, allowing me to enter my password more quickly. It can also lock down the PDA in “smart mode”.

How Do I Use This?

I used this when I worked with a bunch of pranksters who believed any unlocked device, even in a closed desk drawer, was fair game for tampering with. This allowed me to lock down the device without having to use the stylus to unlock it. I stopped using this when I migrated to my Zire 72, but it worked well on my older devices.
