Wednesdays are simplicity days at SimpleProductivity blog.
I haven’t been keeping up with my house.
It isn’t that the house is filthy or anything. It’s just that I am noticing things that need to be done: dusting in odd spaces, deep cleaning of areas, clutter removal and other things, like washing windows.
I used to use Flylady’s system. And it worked for me, as long as I had a 1100 square foot condo, no children and a husband that was home to help.
Flylady’s system has some great concepts: little and often; breaking a home into designated “zones” to focus on each month; and having a set list of tasks written out that needed to be complete.
Why Flylady Doesn’t Work For Me
On the flip side, Flylady’s system doesn’t take into account working outside the home, small children (and activities), absent spouses and large houses with large yards.
I simply don’t have the time to do all the tasks for all the rooms of my much larger house with yard. And it can’t be done in the 15 minutes per day she recommends.
But She’s Right About One Thing…
But Flylady is right about one thing…if you don’t clean regularly, it takes a lot longer to get through the grime when you do.
Ugh. And that’s where I am.
So Why Don’t I?
I’ve been struggling with getting back into the house cleaning routine. When my husband was not working, my thought was that he would do the cleaning. (ha ha ha) But I ignored it anyway, even when it was not done. Why should I clean when he was home all the time, after all? All that led to was nothing getting done.
And now that he’s working again, I am struggling with being a single parent during the week. By the time I get home from work, get my daughter though homework and piano, cook dinner and get her to bed, I need down time for myself, and I certainly don’t want to spend it cleaning.
And I don’t want to clean on weekends.
But I’m at a crossroads here.
My house needs cleaning.
I can’t afford to have someone else clean my house.
No one else is going to step in and do it for me.
Yet I don’t want to clean on weekends, and I don’t want to clean on weekdays.
Somethings gotta give.
And it’s me.
Crafting My Own System
So I am back to crafting my own system.
I have to take the things that I found sound from Flylady’s system and use it to craft my own system.
I don’t know where this will take me, but I can tell you that when I am done, it will be simple, flexible, and not overwhelming.
