Simplify…With Enough

I have a tendency to overpack. Whether I am packing for work, a day at the beach or a camping trip, I bring along way too much. I don’t know if it’s the Girl Scout in me (“Be Prepared”) or what, but I end up lugging stuff around I never use.

For long trips, I follow “A Simple Productivity Guide to Packing”, and I relax, because I have the essentials. I can’t seem to do that on a day-to-day basis though.

I was packing for our first camping trip of the year (which happened to be smack in the middle of the horrible storms that rolled up the East Coast, but that’s another story), when I realized I could really simplify what I was bringing and lower my stress level considerably.

We were going to be gone overnight. One night. So did I really need to bring the entire notebook for my novel? Nope. How about all the charging tips? Nope, if I ran out of juice it woudn’t kill me to not have my iPod for a couple of hours. What about the computer? No, didn’t really need that. Mulitple notebooks? No.

I realized that by cutting back on all the possibilities and allowing myself the possibility of having some unproductive time, I was actually simplifying with enough.

  1. It is amazing how dependent we have become on technology. I feel weird now to be without it! Isn’t it funny- to live more simply is to live without it?

No, I think that technology can actually be a boon in most circumstances. But my particular problem lately seems to be that I am so worried about not utilizing every minute that I don’t allow for down time. “Enough” gives me breathing space.
