Simplify Your Life by Being Honest

Teaching a child has its moments. My daughter is working on the honesty thing. She got caught telling a lie, mainly because she didn’t have her story straight.

It occurred to me that telling the truth really does simplify life. Mainly because I never have to remember what I told someone. I’ve had this personal policy for years, because it is just one more thing I don’t want to have to think about.

It has some added benefits as well. It sets a good example for my daughter, who is learning how to handle social situations with diplomacy (well, as much as I can muster, which is not much).

My professional reputation is also based on my policy of honesty. Time and again, client feedback indicated they liked working with me because I would tell them the truth…that an idea was far-fetched, or costly, or increased scope. Or that something wasn’t as broken as they had been led to believe. Or that I needed more time before giving my opinion. This also simplified my work life because I never had to backtrack or remember what I had tacitly approved.

So what do you think? Does honesty simplify your life?

I had never thought of being honest as a way to make things simple. That’s another reason to encourage our children to do it!
