Wednesdays are simplicity days at SimpleProductivity blog.
Preparing for a recent trip, I was glad to have my travel checklists available. I don’t travel more than once or twice a year, and these checklists make sure that I cover all the bases. I thought I would share my lists here.
Services
The services checklist is one to take care of any services that need to be arranged or stopped for vacation.
Services Checklist
- Stop mail.
- Stop paper.
- Arrange for neighbor to do trash/recycling.
- Arrange for lawn care.
- Arrange for neighbor to water outside plants.
- Arrange for cat sitter.
- Arrange for dog kenneling.
Packing
Packing for a trip can be a major headache. I have two sets of lists for this: basic packing that would work for any trip, and specific items needed for specific trips, like camping. The basic list here is an adaptation of what I use; I actually have a formula to figure out what I need to bring. Clothing packing lists are available elsewhere on the web, so I’m going to give a summary.
Basic Packing
- Underclothing
- Sleepware
- Clothing, every day
- Clothing, special event
- Jewelry
- Toiletries
- Shoes
- Jackets and outerwear
- Swimwear
For each specific trip, I have another list. My separate lists include camping, beach trip, and our summer institute. Here is the camping list:
Camping Packing
- Tent
- Tent stakes and mallet
- Stove and fuel
- Fire starters
- Matches and/or safety lighter
- Camping kitchen box
- Sleeping bags and pillows
- Air mattresses and pump
- Towels, bath and swim
- Lanterns
- Chairs
- Cooler with food
- Non-cooler food
- Dog bed, bowl, leash and water dish
- Water bucket
- Portable picnic table
- Bug spray
- Sunscreen
- Clothesline
- Garbage bags
- Throw rugs/boot tray
House Preparation
The third checklist is what I need to do to get the house ready for an extended absence. This list can be followed in reverse when we return.
- Clean fridge.
- Empty garbage.
- Empty cat box.
- Empty compost container.
- Set light timers.
- Set radio timers.
- Set tv timers.
- Turn down water heater.
- Set thermostats.
- Lock garage.
- Verify all windows and doors locked.
- Unplug appliances.
- Turn off washer water.
- Turn off ice maker.
With this list of items, I never have to worry about something left undone. I can start my vacation or trip with a clear mind.
