The Value of New Year’s Resolutions

Fridays are tip days at SimpleProductivity blog.

I have to admit, I am intrigued by the idea of New Year’s resolutions. It seems so pat to be able to say, “on this day I will start such-and-such.” Yet the people I know who set resolutions seem to fail, quickly.
Now when I say I am intrigued, do not take that to mean that I make them. I haven’t done so in years. Since I was a child, in fact. Mainly because it seemed to me that making a New Year’s resolution took the drive of doing something and put it off to a point in time when the drive may not be there.
But at the same time, I think that looking at what we want to accomplish, and start on now, is a valuable exercise. What would I like to change? What small steps can I make in my daily life to bring me closer to a dream?
It’s something to think about. But don’t put it off to the New Year. If you have an urge to change something, start now.

I don’t make resolutions, but I do reviews three times a year: beginning of the year, end of the school year, beginning of the school year. That’s when I feel the most intense drive towards change and renewal, and can ride that drive towards improvement.
Awesome timing. It’s good that you recognize that timing within yourself. I also feel an excitement and a “wanna-do-new-stuff” at the beginning of the school year.
I totally agree. The changes that stick for me are the ones I start immediately while I’m motivated, instead of waiting for a certain day.
I wonder if New Year’s resolutions would be more effective on a quarterly basis?
