Why I Won’t Support PocketGear

Posted on December 20, 2007 by LJ

I have used PalmGear for years, and when I linked to a place where someone could download a product I had reviewed, I would always link back to the PalmGear site. When I was looking for software, that was the first place I would go.

Recently PalmGear merged with PooketGear. I thought everything would be the same.

Until last week.

I went out to look to see if Handyshopper had been updated. Granted, it has been a while since the code was updated, but I check my core list of applications for updates every three months or so. And I used the PalmGear link.

I was very surprised to find out that none of the applications that were freeware had been moved over to PocketGear. Not even if they were considered “essential” on the PalmGear lists.

So basically, if you want free software, don’t look at PocketGear. To me that limits their usefulness. It also smacks of greed in my mind. Sure, I could see taking off the hundreds of freeware applications that hadn’t been updated in years, or had low download rates. But not just eliminating all freeware during the port.

I spent an afternoon converting my local database of links to other sources. I will be updating all past reviews to use the new links as well.

I was very surprised, when very soon after posting this, I received an email from Nicky Peele, a PocketGear employee. Nicky stated “As you can imagine, the migration of PalmGear.com into PocketGear.com has been a huge undertaking. We have had to stagger the
implementation process to insure that site responsiveness is not jeopardized.” PocketGear appeared to take my comments seriously and asked for a list of freeware I considered essential.

However, although Nicky stated that the freeware import would begin in January ’08, I have yet (in mid-February ’08) to see any freeware titles on the PocketGear site.
